Sinking Funds: The Boring Trick That Ends Surprise Expenses
Christmas isn't a surprise. Neither is car maintenance. Sinking funds turn predictable 'emergencies' into boring monthly line items.

Most "emergencies" are actually predictable events you didn't save for. Christmas. Car registration. Back-to-school. Tires. A wedding season. A vet visit. None of these ambush anyone — they're just unplanned for.
Enter the sinking fund: a savings bucket for a specific future expense, funded a little every month.
How it works in practice
- New tires next year: $800. Divide by 12 → save $67/month.
- Christmas: $600 → $50/month, funded by summer.
- Car registration: $180 → $15/month.
- Annual insurance premium: set your own math.
Each bucket gets a name and an automatic monthly transfer. When the expense arrives, the money is simply there — no credit card, no drama, no resentment.
Why this changes your nervous system
Once predictable expenses are funded, your "emergency fund" is genuinely for emergencies. Your budget stops getting wrecked by things you could see coming. And you stop feeling like money problems are random attacks — most of them are just calendar events.
Start with three buckets, not ten
Pick the three expenses that have hurt the most in the last year. Typical starters:
- Car & home (maintenance, repairs, registration)
- Gifts & holidays (December is not a surprise — it's on the calendar)
- Annual bills (insurance, memberships, taxes you pay yourself)
Set them up as separate savings accounts or labeled "vaults" if your bank offers them. Automate the transfers for the day after payday. Look at them monthly for ten minutes.
The unsexy magic
Sinking funds are boring. That's the point. Boring money is money that behaves. The people who seem weirdly calm about money aren't lucky — they've just funded the calendar.
Your 15-minute setup
- List the three predictable expenses that hurt most last year.
- Divide each by 12 (or by the months until it hits).
- Open the buckets and set automatic transfers.
- Name each one after the thing it protects you from.
Nothing here requires more income. It requires noticing that the future is, mostly, predictable.
